Whether you frequent The Frontier every week or only come every once in a while, you have probably noticed that we have a little community garden by the back entrance. Or, maybe you have noticed the group of people tending the garden on Thursdays around lunchtime. Last year the garden grew to be huge, and was overflowing with tomatoes, pumpkins, squash, cucumbers, wild flowers, and herbs.
Everyone is welcome! This year we are back in action! For the spring season we have planted kale, Swiss chard, arugula, carrots, and lettuce. We have also added two new beds of wildflowers in an effort to help attract pollinators. Our irrigation methods have also been stepped up! They are now on a self-timer, making watering an easier task.
Interested in getting your hands dirty? Here are some options:
- Help us install milkweed plugs to help attract monarch butterflies.
- Work to install and grow a dedicated “pollinator garden” that will increase the natural biodiversity on The Frontier’s campus.
- Replant our indoor grow panels – they could really use some love!
- Drying herbs
We are also going to be partnering with the Farmery, our onsite café, to host a tomato growing competition. The details on that are still being finalized, but be on the lookout for where to enter the competition and show off your green thumb! There will be prizes for the winners, so yeah, you’re gonna wanna stay tuned.
If you are interested in joining come out on Thursdays from 11:30-1:00 or contact Jacob Newbauer to get added to the weekly e-mails about what we will be doing in the garden each Thursday.
