US2020 RTP just hosted its 5th expo! Yes, expo number five occurred on April 7, 2017. We hosted 11 schools and many homeschoolers from Durham, Wake, Person, Bertie and Pitt County, all bringing together a total of 288 students. We also had 23 companies who exhibited interactive demos, in addition to our 119 speed mentors!
During the expo, our invited students got the opportunity to interact with STEM professionals in various fields and companies. These interactions took place during the Paths to the Park session where the exhibits took place and during speed mentoring where a brief mentoring session occurred. We were privileged to have Astronaut John Glenn at the Frontier the morning of the expo! Read more about his visit here.
Our newly added session, STEM Tank, also was a great success! STEM Tank was introduced to give our students a chance to brainstorm answers to challenging issues in our society today using STEM. Our participating schools presented ideas on how to reduce light pollution for awards! Our STEM Tank winner was Hilburn Academy, with Knightdale High and Brentwood coming in 1st and 2nd runner up respectively.
Being a non-profit organization, the success of our expos will not be the same without our event sponsors Biogen, Cisco, RTI, Cambridge Systematics, Red Hat, IBM, as well as Jimmy Johns for our food sponsorship.
